1. How do you eat a vegan keto diet and will it prevent the top chronic diseases from happening?

Hi Jimmy, Will and Carrie,

Thank you for this special vegan keto episode. My husband and I have adopted a traditional ketogenic approach and have seen improvements in our body composition. I have noticed greatly improved energy, mental performance, and psychological health. In fact, last night I played two hours of volleyball and had more energy than the much younger fitness coach on my team!

My mom is 67 years old, semi-retired, and is struggling with unplanned weight gain, muscle loss, low energy, a weak immune system, slow healing, brain fog, moodiness, and mental function issues that seem to be linked to elevated blood sugar levels. We've been talking about keto for about a year, but she is afraid to try it because she is a vegetarian (that includes no dairy except butter, but she will eat eggs). She thinks there won't be anything left for her to eat if she cuts carbs. She has been eating high-carb, low-fat, and low protein. To her, a can of black beans is enough protein for one day and a teaspoon or two butter is plenty of fat. She has been trying to get omega-3 fats from flaxseed and canola oil. She is excited about hearing what you have to share on this podcast and wants to know the answers to the following questions.

- How do you prepare quick and easy vegan keto recipes?
- How do you prevent hunger while eating vegan keto?
- Where do you get your fat intake from on vegan keto?
- What omega-3 sources of fat are there to consume?
- How much protein is appropriate on a vegan keto diet and how do you get it? Tofu?
- Will supplements be necessary to get all the vitamins in my vegan keto diet?

2. What are your thoughts on protein combining, getting complete proteins, and incorporating pea protein to get a better amino acid profile on a vegan keto approach?

Hi guys,

I’m a vegan keto dieter and would love to hear Dr. Carrie’s views on essential amino acids eating this way. Protein combining is a contentious issue in the vegan world and I’ve found through my own research tracking my macronutrients that vegan keto IS limited by lysine and to some extent methionine as we mostly cut out the legumes. I’d love to hear her views on the subject of protein combining, how to get complete proteins on a vegan keto diet, and incorporating things like pea protein to help achieve a full amino acid profile for people who can’t or don’t consume soy.

As a practicing physician, I’d love to have the answers to the following questions regarding a vegan keto nutritional approach:

- What fats do you eat?
- What carbs do you permit?
- Are there any whole grains?
- Any beans?
- Any fasting involved?
- Supplements you take?
- Do you monitor ketosis? How?
- What exercise do you recommend when doing vegan keto?
- How many days a month do you recommend eating vegan keto? Or is it constant?
- Do you ever go off vegan keto and return to a plant-based lower-fat diet to cycle out of ketosis?
- Are there any concerns about osteoporosis from acidosis?

4. How do you prevent nutrient deficiencies on a vegan keto diet? What impact would incorporating an occasional vegan keto day into my regular ketogenic diet?

Hi Jimmy, Dr. Cole, and Dr. Diulus,

How does someone eating a vegan keto diet get their Vitamin B12? I thought Vitamin B12 could only be found in animal-based foods. And what about other nutrients that only come from animals such as dietary cholesterol? If a vegan keto diet is a sustainable way of fueling the human body over the long-term, then does that mean you HAVE to take supplements in order to remain healthy? I’m sure your body can “get by” for a while, but at what cost later on...I’m very interested in what impact implementing vegan keto days into my regular ketogenic diet.

5. Why do some people find it difficult to lose weight on a vegan keto diet as compared with a meat-based ketogenic nutrition plan?

Hey guys,

I'm on a vegan keto group on Facebook and I often read about people gaining weight instead of losing it while eating that way. Why does it seem more difficult for some people to lose weight while eating vegan keto than meat-eating keto dieters? Is there something in the animal-based foods that contributes to easier weight loss success that is lacking in a vegan keto diet? Thanks for helping me understand this better.

1. Is it an issue that I only have one well-formed and easy-to-pass bowel movement every other day since shifting my diet to keto?

Hey Jimmy and Will,

Thanks so much for talking so openly about poop! When you said that all we need is two snakes a day, all I could think of was no way! After shifting my diet to keto, I noticed the amount of food I was consuming decreased with more nutrient dense foods satisfying me. My theory is my body was actually able to use most of the food I was consuming without much waste which explains why my bowel movements went down. I simply generate less waste now, right? My estimation is that I average a poop every other day but it is well formed and passes easily so it doesn’t appear I am constipated. Should I be worried that it is so infrequent and what should I alter in my diet if my bowel habits sound problematic?

3. Why have I been experiencing regular bouts of loose stools since I’ve shifted my diet over to a ketogenic approach?

Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole,

I've been listening to your podcast since I began keto in June. Thank you for all the great information. In August, I began struggling with regular bouts of diarrhea on a daily basis. I can't remember the last solid stool that I had. I no longer track my macros since I'm at my goal weight. I typically have a Bulletproof coffee with MCT oil powder and butter in the morning and eat leftovers for lunch, an afternoon snack of a cheese stick or almond butter, and then dinner with meat and veggies. I've been playing around with my carbs, including adding back in healthy carbs like sweet potato and checking my blood ketones to confirm I'm always in ketosis. I drink lots of water and I'm good about getting in my electrolytes. I've even cut back on magnesium to see if that would help. It has not. My stomach isn't upset and overall I feel a lot better than I did before keto. Any clues on what I can do to decrease the diarrhea?

4. What is causing my poop to be watery and yellow when I’m eating keto and extended fasting?

Hello Jimmy and Dr. Cole,

I’ve been eating keto with intermittent fasting since mid-April and have been slowly healing my gut from a lot of issues I was experiencing. But here is the issue: my poop is watery and yellowish in color (my liver levels were tested and it came back as optimal on the lab results). I especially see this yellowish loose stool when I fast for longer than 16 hours. My MCT oil consumption is 1 Tbs in my coffee and I did that without issues at the beginning of keto. It kicked in at the three- month mark. My food intake hasn’t changed much since going keto, but I have noticed that when I eat off plan even a little I get the runs hard and furious. One other issue that might be connected to this is I’m dealing with hair loss from thyroid issues as well as high estrogen levels. Can you help me figure this out?

5. What can I do to improve my Type 2 on the Bristol Stool chart to the more healthier Type 3 and 4?

Hi Jimmy and Will,

Thank you for all you do for the keto community. In the episode where you discussed the Bristol Stool chart, you commented that any good Bristol chart would include tips to fix each type of poop. I can’t find this information, so please post this in the show notes section of your Poopcast. I seem to constantly have Type 2 poop where it is sausage-shaped and lumpy and I’ve tried various tips to getting it back to normal, including adding salt, magnesium, extra water, and upping my fiber. But nothing seems to help other than doing an extended fast. Any other tips you can give me to help improve this to the more healthy stool?

7. Why have my bowels come to a screeching halt since I switched over to a ketogenic diet? What can I do to get my bowel moving again?

Hi Jimmy and The Poopmaster,

I have been doing keto for about a month and ever since I started eating this way it’s like my bowels have come to a screeching halt. I consume 50-60g total carbs with around 30 grams of fiber. I drink close to a gallon of water a day and supplement with magnesium and probiotics. Is this an issue I need to be concerned about? Any ideas on how to make my bowels start back up again?
